Oh Won bae (b. 1953) completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in Fine Arts at Dongguk University before graduating from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including First Prize in Painting at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (1984), Third Prize in Painting from the Académie des Beaux-Arts, France (1985), the Young Artist of the Year Award (1992), and the 9th Lee Jung-seob Art Award (1997). He has held 21 solo exhibitions, including Artist of the Month at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA, 1989), exhibitions at Kumho Museum of Art (2003, 2012), Jangdo Gallery at Yeosu Arts Center (2021), and Incheon Art Platform (2023). Since his debut with the group exhibition Representation 4313 in 1980, he has participated in over 300 curated group exhibitions in Korea and abroad, including Salon d'Automne (1983), Salon de Mai (1986), Young Prospects (MMCA, 1987), the Cagnes International Painting Festival (1992), Korean Art '95: Mass and Density (MMCA, 1995), The Restoration of Painting (MMCA, 2001), Disaster and Healing (MMCA, 2021), Artificial Ethics (Seosomun Shrine History Museum, 2022), and The Birth of Painting (Seoul Arts Center Hangaram Art Museum, 2022), among many others. His works are held in collections including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; the Incheon Foundation for Arts and Culture; the French Ministry of Culture; the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris; Dongguk University; Seoul National University; Wonkwang University; Inje Manhae Village; Jeondeungsa Temple; Haeinsa Temple; Jeongtosa Temple; and the Fukuoka City Museum of Art, among others. He has served as a juror for the Lee Jung-seob Art Award, the Wuhyeon Award, the Dong-A Art Grand Exhibition, and the Joongang Fine Arts Prize, and served as General Director of ASYAAF in 2012. He joined the faculty of the College of Fine Arts at Dongguk University in 1986, retiring in 2017, and currently holds the title of Professor Emeritus.
