KIM MYUNG JOO

김명주(b.1973)는 홍익대학교 도예과를 졸업, 벨기에 브뤼셀 라 깜브르(La Cambre) 고등 시각 미술학교에서 도자, 공간과 시각, 조형예술 석사 과정을 졸업했다. 프랑스, 벨기에, 스위스를 중심으로 유럽과 한국에서 활발하게 활동 중이다. 작가는 브뤼셀 유학 시절부터 존재에 대한 깊은 탐구를 그녀만의 독특한 조형 언어로 표현하고 있으며, 조각, 드로잉, 회화 모든 매체에 사물을 재현하거나 묘사하기보다 순수하게 내면의 형태로 창작하는 것에 집중한다. 그녀가 전달하는 무한히 시적이지만 경이로운 힘의 세계는 모든 인간을 움직이는 환희와 혼란의 모호한 감정을 전달한다. 최근 개인전으로는 ‘정화된 밤 (Transfigured Night)’(호리아트스페이스, 아이프라운지, 서울), 2023년 ‘Subito P-몰입’( 아트비앤 원피스 프로젝트, 서울), 2022년 ‘기쁨의 거울’(Salle basse de l’Auditorium Rostropovitch, 프랑스 Beauvais), ‘얼굴-Visages’( Vazieux Art Gallery, 프랑스 파리), ‘영혼의 흙’(Kunstforum Solothurn, 스위스 졸로튀른), 2017년 ‘비밀의 형상들’(클레이 아크 김해미술관, 김해), 그룹전으로는 2022년 ‘친숙한, 기이한’(부산현대미술관, 부산), ‘Migration(s)’(Ariana 미술관, 스위스 제네바) 등을 진행하였다. 또한 2014년 파리 현대미술세라믹살롱 C14에서 심사위원상(대상), 2013 년 스위스 Ariana 미술관 미술관상, 2009년 프랑스 TERRALHA 유럽 도예 축제 공모전에서 은상 등을 수상했다. 현재 국립현대미술관 미술은행, Ariana 미술관, 베이징 구오종(Guozhong) 도예 박물관, 일본 시가라키(Shigaraki) 현대 도예 미술관, 핀란드 포지오 아르틱 세라믹 센터(Arctic Ceramic Centre, Posio), 라 깜브르 국립 고등 시각 예술 학교와 개인 소장으로는 디올(Dior) 전 수석 디자이너, 존 갈리아노(John Galliano), Director of Fondation Carmignac (프랑스), Director of Museum of Soleure(스위스)등 전 세계 곳곳에 개인 소장 중이다.

Kim Myung joo (b. 1973) graduated from the Department of Ceramic Arts at Hongik University and completed a Master's degree in Ceramics, Space and Visual Arts, and Plastic Arts at La Cambre National Higher School of Visual Arts in Brussels, Belgium. She is actively working in Europe — primarily France, Belgium, and Switzerland — as well as in Korea. Since her studies in Brussels, the artist has expressed a deep inquiry into existence through her own unique formal language, focusing across sculpture, drawing, and painting not on representing or depicting objects, but on creating purely from inner form. The world she conveys — infinitely poetic yet charged with a sense of wonder — communicates the ambiguous emotions of joy and confusion that move all human beings. Recent solo exhibitions include Transfigured Night (Hori Art Space, Eye Lounge, Seoul), Subito P – Immersion (Art B&B One-Piece Project, Seoul, 2023), Mirror of Joy (Salle basse de l'Auditorium Rostropovitch, Beauvais, France, 2022), Faces – Visages (Vazieux Art Gallery, Paris, France), Soul of Earth (Kunstforum Solothurn, Solothurn, Switzerland), and Secret Figures (Clayarch Gimhae Museum, Gimhae, 2017). Group exhibitions include The Familiar, The Strange (Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, 2022) and Migration(s) (Musée Ariana, Geneva, Switzerland, 2022), among others. She has received numerous awards, including the Jury Prize (Grand Prix) at the Paris Contemporary Ceramic Salon C14 in 2014, the Museum Prize from the Musée Ariana, Switzerland in 2013, and a Silver Prize at the TERRALHA European Ceramic Festival competition in France in 2009. Her works are held in public collections worldwide, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Art Bank (Korea), Musée Ariana, the Guozhong Ceramic Museum (Beijing), the Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art Shigaraki (Japan), the Arctic Ceramic Centre in Posio (Finland), and La Cambre National Higher School of Visual Arts. Private collections include those of the former Creative Director of Dior, John Galliano, the Director of Fondation Carmignac (France), and the Director of the Museum of Soleure (Switzerland), among others.
