"내 작품에 특별한 것이 없다"고 말하는 변웅필의 말은 역설적이게도 그가 천착해온 작업의 본질을 가리킵니다. 호리아트스페이스에서는 2021년 개인전 《SOMEONE》 이후 4년 만에 작가의 새로운 개인전 《아무렇지 않은 날들》을 개최합니다.
변웅필의 화면에는 'SOMEONE'과 'SOMETHING'이 함께 등장합니다. 이름 없이 존재하는 것들, 분명하지만 특정되지 않은 존재들. 작가에게 인물이든 사물이든 단지 색을 담아낼 공간이자 형태일 뿐입니다. 절제된 색면과 단순한 구도 속 대상들은 그저 거기에 있을 뿐입니다.
작가는 그림을 그리는 것을 "논다"고 표현합니다. 무엇을 증명하거나 거대한 메시지를 전하기 위함이 아닌, 매일을 살아가는 자연스러운 행위로서의 회화. 목적이 없기에 순수하고, 일상적이기에 오히려 진실된 시간들이 쌓여 하나의 세계를 만듭니다. 조용하고 소중한 변웅필의 날들을 만나보시길 바랍니다.
Byun Ungpil’s remark, “There is nothing special about my work,” paradoxically points to the very essence of his practice. HORI ART SPACE is pleased to present his new solo exhibition, Ordinary Days, marking his first in four years since SOMEONE (2021).
In Byun’s paintings, both “SOMEONE” and “SOMETHING” appear—unnamed yet undeniable presences, beings that exist without specification. To the artist, whether human or object, each is simply a form and a space for color to inhabit. Within his restrained color fields and minimal compositions, the subjects simply are.
Byun describes painting as “playing.” It is not an act of proving or conveying grand messages, but a natural, everyday gesture—a way of living. Because it has no purpose, it remains pure; because it is habitual, it becomes truthful. These quiet, sincere accumulations of time form a world of their own.
