호리아트스페이스는 아이프미술경영과 공동 기획으로 함명수 초대전 «BLOW»를 개최합니다. 함명수 작가는 1993년 첫 개인전을 시작으로 줄곧 ‘재현이란 무엇인가’를 탐구했습니다. ‘살아있는 감각’을 어떻게 실현할 것인지를 탐구하며 추상과 구상을 넘나드는 작업을 선보였습니다. 끊임없이 변화하는 듯한 그림을 그리며 표현적인 응용과 생생한 색상을 드러내기도 했습니다.
5년만에 열리는 이번 초대전은 인물 · 자연 · 도시의 풍경 등 대상을 재현하지 않음으로써 구상적인 형태에서 벗어난 것이 특징입니다. 작업의 과정에서 드러나는 ‘중첩 기법’은 그리면서 지우고 지우면서 그리는 것으로 생성과 소멸의 과정인 동시에 추상으로 나아가는 과정을 의미합니다.
함명수 작가는 서사의 제약에서 벗어나 오직 자유로운 붓터치만으로 생명력의 충만함을 담아냈습니다. 서울대학교미술관 관장 심상용 교수는 회화에 대한 함명수의 태도를 일컬어 “바람이 불 듯 텅 빈 마음”으로 그린다고 평했습니다. 회화에 대한 끊임없는 성찰을 통해 집착을 내려놓았습니다. 이번 전시에서 색채의 울림과 리드미컬한 에너지로 응축된 ‘바람결의 풍경’을 느껴보시길 바랍니다.
Hori Art Space, in partnership with AIF Art Management, is pleased to present Ham Myungsu’s exhibition titled “BLOW.” Since his debut solo exhibition in 1993, the artist has consistently delved into the concept of “representation.” In his pursuit of capturing “living sensations” within his art, he seamlessly moves between abstraction and figuration. His dynamic paintings, marked by expressive techniques and vivid colors, remain in a perpetual state of evolution.
This solo exhibition, taking place after a five-year hiatus, marks a shift away from figurative forms, leaving behind representations of human figures, nature, and cityscapes. Ham Myungsu’s “layering technique” plays a central role in his creative process, involving drawing while erasing as well as erasing while drawing. This technique symbolizes both the acts of creation and dissolution, reflecting his journey toward abstraction.
Ham Myungsu has liberated himself from the constraints of narrative, expressing the fullness of life through the unrestrained flow of his brushwork. Sim Sangyong, Director of the Seoul National University Museum of Art, has described the artist’s approach to painting as “Paint with a light heart, as effortlessly as the wind blows.” Through his unending contemplation of the essence of painting, Ham has let go of the idea of obsession.
