그동안 인간의 숙명과도 같은 ‘삶의 무게감’을 표현해왔던 송필 조각가의 신작전 《Beyond the Withered》가 열립니다. 전시 제목 ‘Beyond the Withered’에서 짐작되듯, 이번 전시의 작품은 ‘생명의 무한한 순환성’이란 주제를 담고 있습니다. 사전적 의미의 ‘말라 죽었거나 시든 상태의 너머’란 뜻처럼, 현재의 ‘시듦’ 그 너머에 새로운 희망이 순환될 것이란 메시지를 전하고 있습니다. 우리나라를 비롯해 전 세계인이 코로나19 팬데믹으로 일상의 작은 희망마저 잃어가고 있습니다. 이러한 시기에 ‘삶의 진정 어린 소중함과 위안’을 담은 송필 작가의 작품이 남다른 의미가 있을 것이라 믿습니다. 또한 송필 작가의 작품들은 작가 개인의 삶에 대한 고민을 넘어 동시대적 감성으로 공감대를 불러일으키기에 충분하다고 여겨집니다.
이번 전시는 무려 7미터에 가까운 대형 스테인리스 스틸 나무를 공중에 매단 < 허공에 뿌리내린 > 작품이 제일 먼저 관객을 맞습니다. 전시장으로 오르는 회전식 계단 통로의 공중에 매달린 이 작품은 1~2mm의 세밀한 잔뿌리와 나뭇가지를 단조(鍛造)와 용접 기법으로 처리해 경이로움까지 자아냅니다. 이외에도 약 3미터 길이의 죽은 나무껍질에 꽃을 피운 청매화 작품 < 레퓨지아-움트다Ⅰ > 등을 비롯한 다양한 작품들이 전시됩니다. 아무쪼록 ‘영원히 시들지 않는 생명의 새롭고 무한한 희망’을 노래한 송필 작가의 신작전을 통해, 고된 역경과 순간의 낭만이 수없이 교차하는 인생의 긴 여정을 똑바로 마주 설 수 있는 용기와 삶의 지혜를 만나시길 기대합니다.
We warmly invite you to Beyond the Withered, a new exhibition by sculptor Song Feel, who has long reflected on the profound weight of life through his artistic journey. This latest body of work turns to a new theme: the endless cycle and quiet resilience of life. As the title suggests, Beyond the Withered contemplates what lies beyond the fading and withering—pointing to renewal, hope, and continuity. Much like nature’s own rhythm, where even decay leads to rebirth, the works on view speak of life’s quiet but powerful persistence.
The exhibition opens with a striking installation: a nearly 7-meter-long stainless steel tree suspended in midair, titled . Hanging delicately above a spiral stairway, the piece features fine branches and rootlets—some as thin as 1 to 2 millimeters—crafted through forging and welding techniques, inviting both wonder and reflection.
Other featured works include Refugia – Sprouted I, in which blossoms emerge from a piece of dead tree bark, as well as various new sculptures that continue Song Feel’s exploration of life’s gentle strength. At a time when many have experienced uncertainty and loss, we hope this exhibition offers a quiet space for reflection, comfort, and renewed appreciation for the enduring essence of life.
