Haunting Loneliness
February 15 ━ March 13, 2021

HORI ART SPACE is pleased to present Haunting Loneliness a solo exhibition by acclaimed Korean artist Ahn Chang Hong, known for his bold and distinctive visual language. In this latest series, Ahn embraces the tools of the digital age to produce a compelling body of digital pen drawings, marking a new chapter in his decades-long artistic practice. Over the past two years, the artist has experimented with digital media using a Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, a smartphone device that serves both as canvas and brush. The creative process begins with the collection of photographic imagery sourced from the internet—visual fragments of contemporary life, culture, and fashion. Ahn then reinterprets these images through a repetitive cycle of deletion and addition, drawing directly over them using a mobile application. What emerges is a complete transformation: a layered, emotional reinterpretation that transcends the original photograph while retaining its core aesthetic.
Despite the digital format, the works retain a powerful sense of hand-drawn tactility. Slightly coarse gestures, a byproduct of drawing on a small screen, are not polished away but rather embraced by the artist as part of the work’s expressive quality. Ahn refers to this as the “texture of digital drawing”—a subtle yet deliberate visual residue of artistic instinct and human emotion embedded in a technological medium. In Haunting Loneliness, the artist presents a nuanced dialogue between image and memory, fashion and form, technology and tradition. Without undermining the contemporary identity of his source material, Ahn successfully injects his own voice, offering a unique perspective on the digital and the ephemeral in modern visual culture.
‘Desire’ is always the topic, which may be the impetus that make human humans. Everyone shares a mentality calibrated toward filling and restoring deficiencies. Such desires transcend needs and transform into obsession for results. The Korean title for this digital pen drawing series, which is titled Haunting Loneliness in English, can be literally translated as ‘the Ghost Fashion’; Its dictionary definition may be ‘the unforgettable solitude or loneliness (because of beauty, sorrow or fear).’ Ahn focuses not on what a model is wearing, but on the psychological state of the model. The desire described by Ahn contains the insight of balance that warns against the excessive greed. On the other hand, it is a lucid dream that helps acknowledge the pains and sufferings of our time.
