그동안 ‘순간적 풍경’(Instant Landscape) 시리즈를 지속적으로 발표해온 김남표 작가가 새롭게 제주프로젝트를 선보입니다. 이번 기획 초대전의 제목은 ‘김남표의 제주이야기―Gumgil(검질)’입니다. 제목의 ‘검질’은 길가나 수풀에서 흔히 만나는 ‘잡초 넝쿨’의 제주도 방언입니다. 기본적으로는 제주의 검질 풍경을 배경으로 삼았지만, 김남표의 시그니처 중의 하나인 호랑이와 표범 혹은 얼룩말이 함께 등장합니다. 이전과 다른 점은 제주에서 보고 느낀 풍경을 기초로 했다는 점입니다. 또한 작가는 210조각으로 이루어진 특별한 작품도 준비했습니다. 이 셀 작업들의 관람 포인트는 작가가 풍경 속에 진주를 숨겨놓듯, 간혹 부분 부분에 전혀 다른 조각의 그림을 배치한 점입니다.
이번 ‘김남표의 제주이야기―Gumgil(검질)’은 30개월 넘는 기간 동안 준비해온 특별한 프로젝트입니다. 작가는 지난 2018년부터 제주도를 오가며 새로운 작품세계의 확장을 모색하던 차에, 지난해에는 1년 간 제주도에 작업실을 마련하고 현장 곳곳을 누비며 몸으로 체감한 감흥을 화폭에 옮겼습니다. 이번 전시는 한 예술가의 인생의 변곡점에서 자신의 완숙한 깊이와 무게감을 드러내는 전시가 될 것입니다.
HORI ART SPACE is pleased to present Nampyo Kim’s Jeju Story — Gumgil, a new solo exhibition by the artist known for his long-running Instant Landscape series. The title Gumgil comes from a Jeju dialect word referring to wild vines or weeds often found along roadsides or in fields. These seemingly ordinary plants become the backdrop for Kim’s imaginative compositions, where his signature animals—tigers, leopards, or zebras—make an appearance. While the works maintain his familiar visual language, they are rooted in a new context: the landscapes and impressions the artist experienced while staying on Jeju Island.
A highlight of the exhibition is a special piece made up of 210 individual panels. Within this large-scale cell work, Kim has hidden small, unexpected images—like hidden gems tucked into the scenery—adding a playful and surprising element to the viewing experience. This project is the result of over 30 months of preparation. Since 2018, Kim has visited Jeju regularly, and in 2023 he set up a studio on the island. There, he spent a year exploring and observing the surroundings firsthand, allowing the island’s atmosphere to shape his creative process. Gumgil reflects a meaningful moment in the artist’s journey—an expansion of his practice that embraces both personal growth and a fresh connection with nature. It offers viewers a poetic glimpse into the evolving world of Nampyo Kim.
